FUN IN THE SUN (29th April 2007)
The crowds turned out in glorious weather on the 29th April for a Sunday afternoon packed with excitement especially for children. There were ducks to be found & trees to be identified whilst the more athletically inclined tested our guest goal keepers on the football pitch. With refreshments courtesy of the Family Contact Line and a variety of creative stalls plus the shiny appeal of one of our local Fire Engines a great time was had. Both the Friends & the Family Contact Line were able to raise much needed funds as well seeing the park being enjoyed by young & old alike.

HEDGE LAYING – 5th FEBRUARY 2006
On a damp & overcast Sunday Sale & Altrincham Conservation Volunteers demonstrated that axes are not just destructive in nature. With skill & precision ten of their members started laying a 20 year old stretch of hawthorn hedge separating the football pitch from the woodland area. This rejuvenates the hedge by stimulating strong young shoots to grow from the base. It will also increase the light levels in the woodland behind the hedge & allow planting of a greater variety of native woodland plants under the trees. The aim is to improve the biodiversity of the park – and hopefully make it more interesting as well.

SPRING BULB PLANTING - 4th SEPTEMBER 2005
Around 800 daffodil bulbs donated by B&Q & Homebase were planted by friends & volunteers of all ages. It was a beautiful late summer’s day following a spate of good weather, which meant some very hard work digging holes in baked earth. Smaller bulbs, like tête à tête, were planted around the trees in the area adjacent to the car park, whilst larger bulbs were planted in 2 nearby empty beds. We look forward to seeing the fruits of our labours next spring - providing the squirrels who took great interest in the activity haven’t removed all the bulbs for safe keeping elsewhere.

TREASURE HUNT - 9th OCTOBER 2005
On a perfect Sunday afternoon more than 300 children, accompanied by parents, grandparents & friends, helped fill the park in their quest for treasure. With the trees just starting to show their autumn colours people began queuing well before the 2 o’clock start.
The under 5’s had a picture trail to follow while the over 5’s answered a series of questions before they could find the hidden word. Once completed all the children received “treasure” donated by several local businesses. In addition there was a cake stall and a tombola which both did brisk business. Finally, a wonderful cake, made & donated by Pat Prole, was cut to mark the park’s 125th anniversary this month.
All in all a very enjoyable afternoon. As a first treasure hunt this will certainly take some beating! Our thanks to all those who helped make it such a success.
